Now and Then photo series
How cool is this? People submit photos of them holding an old photo in front of its current location.
Just for the taste of it
'Tis a little bit scary how well the Inception music matches up with the latest Coca-Cola ad. Bwaaaaaah!!
HBGM posts of the year
My five nominations for the best HBGM posts of 2010 are, in no particular order:
I'm Catman
Never gonna...
Kristianne Baille
OMG
Ghost Mutt Radio's Busy as a Bumblebee Mix
You guys should add to this post with your top 5. Also, I reckon this year there have been some pretty strong central themes in our posts. Hmm, yes. Themes. I'm thinking: remixes, Inception, cats and Natalie Portman*.
*Not really but I just wanted to type her name.

Norwegian TV promo music video with 80s/90s stars
This is pretty amazing. That's good! It is also a train wreck. That's bad. Kelly McGillis is in it. That's good! It contains potassium benzoate...

The Future
Jonsi, the lead singer of Sigur Ros, released a solo album a little while ago. Then he went on tour. Now he has released a live album. So I bought that as a CD. The coolest thing is, when you buy the CD you also get to download all the tracks as MP3s and also videos of a Jonsi concert. It's like a 1 gig download. How cool is that? Very cool.

PRESS RELEASE: Google acquires How Bout Ghost Mutt
1 October 2010, SYDNEY -- Google, Inc. today announced that it has acquired How Bout Ghost Mutt, the premier online destination for nerds, for $1.2 billion in cash.
The two companies will now be known as 'Googlemutt', with a new focus on increasing access to the world's important information about Inception parodies.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that Ghost Mutt was a good fit for the search giant. "We've had our eye on them for some time now," he said, "ever since they posted that keyboard cat video."
Schmidt said Ghost Mutt's high volume traffic was also a large factor in seeking the acquisition. "They usually get two or three hits a day, sometimes even four, which is pretty amazing in this environment."
Ghost Mutt's founders were unavailable for comment because they were too busy spending the $1.2 billion on DVDs.

The Language of Fakebook
Article in NY Times about persona on Facebook compared to real life. I think it's right. Examples:
A 14-year-old I talked to about this sent me a message that pretty much sums it up: “I write more enthusiastically on Facebook than I actually am in real life. Like if I see something remotely funny I might say ‘HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA,’ when really there is no expression on my face.”
and
It should be said that adults are not necessarily less fictionalized, or more themselves, on Facebook; they are simply less natural, less conversant, less in their element, when they fictionalize. How many people do you know who are in the midst of some great existential or marital crisis, but whose Facebook page is all family photos from the south of France, or the Vineyard, or Bangkok, and charming things their children said?

If this is a consular ship, WHERE is the ambassador?

Do you guys remember when this car-carrying ship called the Tricolor sank in the English Channel with about 2000 luxury cars on board? Well, they removed the ship (and the cars) because other ships kept hitting it (oops). There's this great website that documents the salvage.
Basically, they put two cranes on either side of the ship and then used a cutting wire between them to slice the ship into 9 pieces. The pieces were lifted onto a barge and towed away!
All the cars ended up being scrapped. I just can't believe how awesome this is.
