It's darkest before the dawn

The reason Dark Knight is (will be) my favourite film of 2008 isn't because of the story (fantastic), the acting (brilliant), the action (awesome), the effects (seamless) or the line, "It's darkest before the dawn" (clever).

The reason Dark Knight is so good is because it's a character-driven film in which the story, acting, action and effects fit around the characters. You never feel like Batman is driving a Batmabike just for the sake of it. Or that going off to Hong Kong is an ad for that city. Or that Morgan Freeman was cast because he has a cool voice.

In fact, the film even feels like an old-fashioned ensemble piece. All the characters are important (not just Batman) and all the actors contribute. Heath Ledger's The Joker might just be the standout, but he doesn't overshadow the film like he could have.

Oh, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is hot.
