How ironical
Approximately 80 people have been evacuated from the Rookwood Crematorium in Sydney's west after a fire took hold in a roof space, NSW Fire Brigades say.
(Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you over-estimate their chances.)
Converging Lines in The Dark Knight
From FXRant:
A strong, conspicuous visual motif of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" is the bold use of converging lines of perspective.
Nolan and his cinematographer Wally Pfister photographed "The Dark Knight" much like they did for its predecessor "Batman Begins," with anamorphic lenses. This time around, however, certain sequences were shot entirely with superwide lenses in the 65mm Imax format. Given that Nolan photographs and edits his films with a classic style (allowing the actors to move about the frame in wide and medium shots, and only going in for tight closeups when absolutely necessary), these wide angle shots give the film its distinctive feel, separating the movie from its louder, messier peers.

Breaking News: New Macbook to have screen below trackpad!!
Apple is about to release new Macbooks in August or September that will have a glass trackpad that has a secondary screen below it!
My source tells me that this "advanced feature" may only be available in the Macbook Pros.
This feature is so hot!!! The second display can be used to display your favorite photo and wait for it... it will allow you to run iPhone applications without having to boot the full Mac OS!
Remember: You heard it on "Ghost Mutt" first!

Carbon nanotubes causing asbestos-like effects in lab mice
The scientific and engineering possibilities of carbon nanotubes are hard to overestimate, but a study out of the UK might put a damper on the small-scale party for a while: mice injected with certain lengths of nanotubes developed lung problems similar to those caused by asbestos. Apparently the long, straight shape of the nanotubes causes problems for the lining of the lungs designed to deal with particulate matter, which can cause scarring, inflammation, and "probably cancer in the long term." That's a big "probably," however -- researchers say they're a long way from actually proving the link between long nanotubes and cancer, but no one's denying that it's troublesome, including the Nanotechnology Industries Association, which told the BBC that "there could be reason for concern... but it needs to be validated." It also seems like the focus is on handling the tech correctly, which is promising -- we'll keep an eye on how this plays out.

Adventures in nerdism
Excerpt from New York Times article by David Halbfinger on The Dark Knight:
Christopher Nolan, the director of “The Dark Knight” — the follow-up to his 2005 franchise reboot, “Batman Begins” — is unperturbed by the rain, but a tiny detail irks him. “Hey, buster!” he shouts to the stuntman, craning his neck skyward and raising his voice for the first time all day (politely, as ever, but enough so he can be heard). “Could you turn yourself a little more to the left?”
Email from Ian to NY Times journalist:
Hi, I really liked your article, 'Batman's Burden: A Director Confronts Darkness and Death'. Was wondering, though, where you've quoted Mr Nolan as saying, "Hey, buster!", he was actually saying, "Hey, Buster!" to Buster Reeves, the lead stuntman. Cheers, Ian.
Email from NY Times journalist to Ian:
Thanks much! And you're quite right, Buster is the man. Actually that article ran in the NYT several months ago, and the lower-case b was edited in by someone who didn't think to ask me why I'd capitalized it; the mistake was corrected in the NYT but news service customers may have missed the correction. Best, DH

It's darkest before the dawn

The reason Dark Knight is (will be) my favourite film of 2008 isn't because of the story (fantastic), the acting (brilliant), the action (awesome), the effects (seamless) or the line, "It's darkest before the dawn" (clever).
The reason Dark Knight is so good is because it's a character-driven film in which the story, acting, action and effects fit around the characters. You never feel like Batman is driving a Batmabike just for the sake of it. Or that going off to Hong Kong is an ad for that city. Or that Morgan Freeman was cast because he has a cool voice.
In fact, the film even feels like an old-fashioned ensemble piece. All the characters are important (not just Batman) and all the actors contribute. Heath Ledger's The Joker might just be the standout, but he doesn't overshadow the film like he could have.
Oh, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is hot.
The following is the opinion of IF and does not necessarily represent the views of all ghostmutters
This is the first time I've posted my opinon about things on Ghost Mutt. But this course of events is what kind of makes me angry about the NSW Govt at the moment. They will do anything just to look good.
Pilgrims progress through park protest
"A handful of angry Surry Hills residents have been forced from a park being cleared for the pilgrimage walk this weekend.
World Youth Day organisers, with help from police, are clearing plants from the park at Parkham Street in Surry Hills - including trimming the branches of a macadamia nut tree - to build a two-metre wide ramp over the park for pilgrims to walk across on their way to Randwick racecourse.
But residents have resisted the move, saying it is over the top and will damage the treasured five- by 10-metre park."

NSW politicians are the best
It is understood Mr Della Bosca refused to comment, and spent at least a part of the hour-long trip between Gosford and Central Station in Sydney inside a toilet.
Inside a toilet?
