My Christmas post and message to viewers!

Arcade Fire interactive music vid

OK, so you need to try this. Try this!

Arcade Fire, the indie Canadian band, have released an interactive version of their music video “Sprawl (Mountain Beyond Mountains). The video, online at sprawl2.com, invites listeners to turn on their webcams and determine the speed at which the video plays through their movements. If you freeze the video starts to loop on the beat, creating a new choreography within the choreography. It is also possible to interact with your mouse, in case you don’t have a camera or you want to switch from dancing to clicking.

The Spielberg Face

This is actually pretty cool, except that it's kinda in lots of other director's films as well...

Google Maps First Person Shooter

This was an actual thing (here: http://poolworldwide.com/shootview/) but Google killed the API link.

FBI: Terrorist Attack On Golden Gate Bridge May Have Been Green-Screened

WASHINGTON—Analysts now believe that last month's horrific attack on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, which left thousands missing and assumed dead, may have actually been carried out with green-screen technology, FBI officials announced Monday.

Sources said federal authorities revisited video of the tragic events of May 16 after a field agent noticed a bright, greenish hue running along the outline of the bridge, and completely surrounding the low-flying missile that entered slowly from the right and struck the beloved national monument. Digital forensic analysts were also able to uncover a number of additional anomalies that may change the way history remembers that terrible day.

"While we must never forget the painful events of 5/16, new evidence has caused us to rethink the nature of the attack," FBI director Robert S. Mueller III said during a press conference. "Specifically the repeated loop of 1950s-era automobiles traveling on the bridge when the first missile hit, the heavy pixilation around the edges of the seventh explosion, and the several inches of green material on both sides of the frame."

"And this would certainly explain why that giant boom mic kept dropping into the shot," Mueller added.

The director also said that the use of chroma-key technology to stage an attack would support widespread claims that rescue workers responding to the bombing were unable to reach the destroyed Golden Gate Bridge because of rush-hour traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Until the bureau can investigate further, the retaliatory bombings in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran have been halted. In addition, the Defense Department has called off its search for the three Arab men who were last seen fleeing the scene of the attack on surfboards.

"We are looking into the possibility that the noticeable hole in the top right-hand corner of the sky might not have been a naturally occurring phenomenon," Mueller said. "But, until we are certain, I advise all Americans to stay alert. If digital imagery was not behind 5/16, there is still a 2,000-foot moth out there capable of creating a mushroom cloud that looks exactly like the one at Hiroshima."

When asked if green-screen technology could have been behind December's gazelle stampede in Detroit, the tidal wave that destroyed Boston in February, or Mount Rushmore ending up at the bottom of a fish tank, Mueller responded, "Absolutely not. Well, wait. Maybe."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano assured the public that reviewing the video footage has already provided military officials with valuable insight into the strategy of terrorists who wish to harm America.

"Our enemies are adapting to an increasingly technological world, and we must adapt with them," Napolitano said. "That is why I've told our operatives to be on the lookout for any disparities in foreground and background lighting, as well as any suspicious persons with floating heads—two things we now know to be indicators of a possible green-screen strike."

According to the White House, President Obama has been kept abreast of the FBI's ongoing investigation into the 5/16 attacks. In a televised address from the base of the partially completed Golden Gate Bridge Memorial Wall, Obama reiterated the need for constant vigilance.

"For now, it appears as if the terrorists have yet to master this technology," the president said. "But as they get better at handling larger composites and become more familiar with Final Cut Pro 6, these attacks will begin to look more realistic. We must work together to make sure that state-of-the-art editing bays and studio spaces do not fall into terrorist hands."

"If that happens, they could theoretically destroy the world," Obama added. "I hear you can do almost anything with that stuff these days."

Wrinkly fingers are an adaptation!?? Woh woh woh

From kottke.org:

You know how your hands and feet get all wrinkly when they're immersed in water for a long time? There's speculation the wrinkles might be an adaptation that allows for better gripping in wet conditions. Here's more information at the NY Times.

Now a paper in the journal Brain, Behavior and Evolution offers more evidence that wet wrinkles serve a purpose. Much like the tread on a tire, they improve traction. In the study, an evolutionary neurobiologist and his co-authors examined 28 fingers wrinkled by water. They found that they all had the same pattern of unconnected channels diverging away from one another as they got more distant from the fingertips. The wrinkles allow water to drain away as fingertips are pressed to wet surfaces, creating more contact and a better grip.

Read the whole paper if you like.

What's your five best trailers eva?

Mine are (in reverse order):

5. Terminator 2: Judgment Day - My favourite in terms of use of voice-over. The only thing was that it gave away he was 'good'!

4. Lord of the Rings - 'Even the smallest person can change the course of the future'. This first trailer was like, 'I have to wait til next Christmas!!??'

3. Speed - It's seriously an awesome trailer, plus they mix up the order of things so you don't really know the whole plot (even though they show the plane blowing up!).

2. Forrest Gump - Best use of music in a trailer, eva. Somehow the editors of this trailer also knew what images and lines the film would become famous for.

1. Inception - tells you so much about the movie, and nothing at all.

Special mention to this one for Little Children. Awesome, awesome sound design.

English, Doc!

This is a random posting I found about the relationship between Doc Brown and Marty. Pretty cool, right?

The ORIGINAL Marty was Doc's lab assistant. They built a time machine together, went back in time, altered the future, and ultimately Lab-Assistant-Marty was returned back to 1985.

But there was one problem! 1955 Doc knew that the Lab assistant Marty would be returning to Hill valley again in 1985, which poses a problem because a NEW Marty McFly was about to be born in 12 years! He knew he had to make sure that when a kid named Marty McFly was born, by whatever means necessary he had to get that kid to get in a time machine on the exact night the lab assistant Marty would be returning.

But this new Marty was raised by a different George and Elaine, and unlike his original version didn’t end up being interested in science at all. This Marty, the Marty we all know and love, was interested in Rock and Roll instead.

So to make sure the RockandRoll-Marty would go back in time on November 5th 1985, the Doc built a giant guitar amplifier as incentive for RockandRoll-Marty to hangout with him and become his friend. He let the Lybians know exactly where he would be to make sure that Marty would get into the Deloreon and try to outrun them , drive 88 miles and hour, and ultimately go back in time, avoiding the paradox and continuing the cycle or Marty’s.

That’s why Doc stressed to Marty that he had to be there on the EXACT time with the camera and that’s why at the end of the film he repeated the experiment again, knowing that it would have disastrous results, because he HAD to to avoid a paradox.

Ian again: Don't quite get that last bit, but woh woh woh.

101 ways to not save Apple

From rc3.org:

Just for fun, in light of Apple’s becoming the most valuable company in the world, I thought I’d take a look at Wired’s June, 1997 cover story 101 Ways to Save Apple. There’s some good advice, some bad advice, and a number of suggestions included to inject some levity into the proceedings.

The best one:

Don’t worry. You’ll survive. It’s Netscape we should really worry about. Nailed it.

Minute of silence for the last issue of News of the World, please

Head of News International James Murdoch said the other day that the News of the World phone hacking scandal "did not live up to the standard and quality of journalism" that his company believes in.

I for one will miss that quality journalism. Very much.
